Five Arts Studio
As temperatures get cooler and days get shorter, there’s no denying that autumn is here. And when the leaves begin to shift to brilliant oranges and yellows, Halloween cannot be far behind. If you’re lucky enough to be staying at a Ridgecrest Cabin at the time when thoughts naturally turn to the quirky and unusual, you’ll want to plan a visit to Five Arts Studio in nearby Cosby, where you’ll find craftsmen working on some of the most unique troll figures you’ve ever seen.
Nestled on a plot of land that backs up to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Five Arts Studio is home to whimsical, mischievous troll figures inspired by the mountain setting and crafted from natural materials found on the property. These trolls are sold in over 300 stores around the world.
The original maker of the trolls, Ken Arensbak, emigrated from Denmark with his wife Neta in 1949. Ten years later he made his first troll as a way to bring to life the stories from Scandinavian folklore that he loved to tell his family. Interest grew immediately, and as the years passed, Arensbak created more and more trolls to fulfill requests from friends and acquaintances. Eventually the troll-making grew into a family business named Five Arts Studio for the five members of the Arensbak family.
Once upon a time, long ago and far away, the people of Scandinavia would gather together around the evening fire and tell stories of secretive gnome-like folks who inhabited the nearby caves and forests as well as the very walls and rafters of their homes.
As hundreds of years went by these tales became legends as they were passed on down through the generations.
With the torch now passed to the next generation, Five Arts Studio continues the tradition of fine craftsmanship and whimsy firmly rooted in the mystery and majesty of the surroundings. You can watch the trolls come to life at the studio as craftsmen build them each weekday and occasionally on Saturdays. Although Five Arts Studio is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, to insure that someone is actively working on a mischievous troll when you visit, you should call ahead to (800) 951-2537 with the day and approximate time that you want to experience the wonder of the trolls. Visiting the studio is by appointment only.
After you’ve found just the right troll to satisfy your Halloween spirit, stop by the Cosby entrance to the National Park on your way back to your cabin. There you can be inspired by the wonder of the natural world for yourself. Who knows what crazy creatures might come to mind?
